Columbia County car accident highlights importance of highway safety
A recent car accident in Columbia County tragically resulted in one death and five injuries when a minivan collided with a truck on Monday, August 6, 2012. The minivan, driven by 84-year-old George Rock, was headed south on State Road 247 when Rock attempted to make a left turn onto Callahan Avenue and collided with driver Steven Ruise’s truck.
A passenger in the van, Julie Anna Townsend, was pronounced dead at Lake City Medical Center. Several other passengers are in serious condition at Shands Hospital. Car accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatality are unfortunately common staples of the news cycle—however, car accidents can be avoided by exercising caution on the road and taking other preventative measures. Although it is too early to know the cause of this car accident, here a few practical safety tips.
Drivers should make sure that all passengers in the vehicle have their seatbelts on before the car is in motion, and that they remain buckled throughout the drive. While drivers should be diligent at all times, they should be extra careful in situations where they have to determine who has the right of way, such as making left turns without a left turn arrow light.
Also, all drivers should be sure to purchase Uninsured Motorist Insurance (or “UM” Insurance). This type of insurance allows injured parties to receive compensation in the event that they are injured by an uninsured or underinsured negligent party. If you are not sure which type of car insurance you have, check with your insurance company as soon as possible. Remember, any time you are involved in a car accident, first call 911 and seek medical help immediately, and then call a car accident attorney who can help you navigate through the legal aspects of the car crash.
