Pedestrian struck and killed on U.S. 441
A man attempting to cross U.S. 441 in Ocala in the early morning hours was struck and killed by a motorist on Saturday, September 22. 71-year-old Theron Lyda, of McIntosh, Florida was attempting to cross the dark highway at around 12:51 a.m. when a 1994 Chevy Lumina driven by Neshan Chandler struck him in the middle of the road. Theron Lydas’ life was tragically cut short. It is unknown if alcohol played a roll in this accident.
A Marion County Fire Rescue paramedic pronounced Lyda dead on the scene of the accident. The driver was not injured.
Unfortunately, accidents such as the one that claimed Theron Lyda’s life are fairly common at night time, when visibility decreases drastically, and drivers don’t anticipate pedestrian traffic on the roads. This is especially true on highways or rural roads with higher speed limits, such as U.S. 441.
Both pedestrians and drivers alike should take precautionary measures to avoid accidents on the road. Pedestrians should avoid walking on roads at night if at all possible. If not, then they should wear reflective gear and only cross the road at designated crosswalks. Drivers should be especially alert when driving at night, operating at slower speeds and keeping a lookout for pedestrians and bikers crossing the street and walking alongside the road. Don’t put yourself at risk of injury or death—be careful when driving or walking at night.
