Texting while driving kills Ocala area man
An Ocala-area man is dead as the result of a car crash in which another driver was texting while driving, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Although the crash occurred on May 10, the investigation recently concluded and found that the accident was caused by the other driver’s carelessness as he lost control of his work truck while he texted.
The driver of the 2006 Ford F-350 work truck was now 30 year-old Walter Griffin Woodward. Woodward was driving on U.S. 27 on his way to the Villages to work when he received a text from his brother. He began to respond, but then swerved off the road. Then, Woodward hit a sign, crossed the median, and collided with a 2011 Dodge Ram driven by 71 year-old Bobby C. Morgan of Morristown, killing Morgan and causing Woodward’s truck to catch fire.
Woodward was wearing a seatbelt and emerged from the accident with no injuries. Morgan was not wearing a seatbelt.
Accidents such as this serve as a tragic reminder to motorists of the dangers of both texting and driving and failing to wear seatbelts. Although it seems as though warnings are everywhere, it bears repeating that you should never text message while driving. Also, drivers should wear their seatbelts at all times, and make sure that all passengers are buckled as well. It is unknown as to whether Bobby Morgan would have survived the crash had he worn his seatbelt, but the driver of the truck that collided with his vehicle did emerge unscathed, possibly due to the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt.
