Number of fungal meningitis cases continues to grow in Florida
On October 24, the Florida Department of Health confirmed three more cases of fungal meningitis associated with contaminated steroid injections given to patients as treatment for pain. One of the patients is a 50 year-old man from Marion County who received his shot five weeks ago, but just recently began to develop symptoms of fungal meningitis.
Symptoms of fungal meningitis include fever, headache, stiffness in the neck, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light and altered mental status.
The other two patients who developed the illness are from Escambia County, in the Florida Panhandle. The Florida Department of Health also advised all 1,038 Florida patients who received the contaminated steroid injections to get checkups six weeks after their injections, regardless of whether or not they were showing indications of fungal meningitis.
If you suspect you have been injected with the contaminated steroid, it is crucial that you seek medical treatment immediately—even if you are not displaying symptoms of fungal meningitis at this time. Fungal meningitis is a very serious illness that could result in death if not treated in time.
It is also important for victims of the contaminated steroid to seek competent legal representation as soon as possible in order to recover damages for lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages. Several lawsuits have already been filed against the manufacturer of the drug—time is of the essence.
Our firm accepts professional malpractice, medical malpractice, wrongful death, and personal injury lawsuits on a contingency fee basis, meaning you would owe us neither legal fees nor costs unless we recover money damage for you—thus, there is no up front cost to you for us to handle the case.
